rodent roomates???

zoogirl Jun 28, 2003 08:22 AM

My kinsnake they tell me is about 1 to 1 1/2 months old, I've had him for 1 week. We've housed him in the same room as our 6 pet rats. I figure he'll probably never eat rats, and rats smell VERY different from mice (to humans anyway) but is there a possibility that he might be "bothered" by the occasional squeaking? ie thinking that there's food somewhere in the room?? Any thoughts out there, thanks in advance.....

it can smell them as snakes have no ears to hear the squeaks. They feel vibrations (from movement) & smell of predators & prey. At this age the rats are considered predators so it may not like the scent. since they're in diff. enclosures it can't feel thier movement. However they can probaly smell the snake & will react differently regardless of the snakes size. since they can't see it they don't know if it is to be eaten or going to eat them. Either way not good roomates. Depending on the kind of king you have ot may get big enough to eat small-med. rats also. Find a new room for it.

good points but I just wanted to mention that I have kept my snakes and rodents in the same room for years and have never had a problem. The worst thing that could happen would be a poor feeding response in the snake but then I would probably remove that snake to a different room.
