Should I seperate them

Angel-girl Jun 28, 2003 09:11 AM

Ok, i am at a dilemma. I have two males one was born 3-23-03 and is 9 1/2" long and the other was born 4-15-03 and is 7 7/8" long in a 50 gallon tank with a female born 4-16-03, and is 7 3/4" long. They have all been getting along, no fighting, biting, or any sort of bad behavior since I got them. I put them in this tank on 6-18-03, and ever since I moved them from the 30 gallon tank the female has not been eating good like she did before. She still eats but not half the amount she did before. I do have a 40 gallon tank that has not been used and I was wondering if I should take the biggest male and put him in the 40 gallon by himself or should I put the female in the tank? I know I will need to seperate the two males within the near futrue and my husband is in the process of building me another enclosure for that reason that way each have their own home to themself, but during the meantime I am just trying to get her to start eating again. I have read that you can house the younger ones together like this up to 5 to 6 months of age at times. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks.

If it were me, I would seperate them. I would put the female back in the 30 gallon tank. The smallest male in the 40, and leave the biggest male in the 50. You can leave them together for a while, but they may start fighting or mating at any time. If you're not there to seperate them, it could have some bad consequences. You're better off seperating them early rather then leaving them together and waiting to see what happens I think.

I can not put the female back into the 30 gallon tank due to I have two new babies in it at this time. I am going to put the biggest male in the 40 gallon by himself. I will have to leave the female and the other male the same size and one day difference in age in the 50 gallon tank until my husband gets a new enclosure built which will be soon. I have read and been told that the beardies will not try to breed until they are about 5 to 6 months old and these are not even 3 months yet. That is why I have them together. Thank you for your advise will have go to the petstore to get a heating strip for the 40 gallon so I can get it set up.

Oh, ok. It was my impression that your 30 was empty. If your female is not feeding well, it would probably be good to get her on her own as soon as possible, or have her alone to eat so she doesn't have to compete for food.

I really do thank you for your advise. Do you think I should put her in the 40 gallon by herself and leave the two males in the same tank until my husband gets the other enclosure made. Or should I leave her with the male the same size as her and take the biggest one out and put him in the tank by himself.
