Egg incubating

Ebola Jun 28, 2003 09:36 AM

My breeding pair of corns have just laid their second clutch this year. The eggs (7 in total) were laid on 27/6/03 and after the failure to hatch any of the first clutch i was wondering if you guys have any tips for me as a total novice to incubating. The eggs have been left in the position they were laid on top of a 50/50 mixture of peat and vermiculite, there is a layer of moist sphagnum moss all around them and i have 5 thermometers inside the box around them. The temps on the thermometers read between 27 deg C and 30 deg C.They were laid in the hide box i provided for my corns when i first suspected my female was gravid.

I've never used a mix of peat moss and vermiculite, just vermiculite alone. Otherwise, conditions sound okay to me. Keep us posted.

I used vermiculite for the first clutch she laid in march this year. Even though i kept humidity steady at 90% and a temp of 29 deg C they went yellow and shrivelled within a matter of 2 weeks which was followed by little white mites crawling all over the eggs.I wiped em as best i could but they went hard and collapsed totally so i had to put them in the bin. This being only the second clutch she has laid i thought i would try a different approach this time, so i left them in the small hide box she had laid them in and put that hide box inside a large sweater box i got from wilkinsons. The hide box is sat on an upturned ceramic bonsai tree plant pot.The bottom of the sweater box is filled with water upto a depth od 1 inch below the top of the plant pot.I have an aquarium heater (thermostatically controlled) in the water and 2 vivarium heat matts under the sweater box. All 3 heat devices are hooked up to a vivarium thermostat and the heat sensor probe is fitted to the side of the hide box next to the eggs. There are 2 humidity and 4 temp gauges placed around the eggs. (lol i aint taking no risks this time).
So this all sounds ok ??? I only got the pair of breeding snakes in January '03 so i am totally novice to incubating.
Any tips would be appreciated
Thx guys n gals
