Morelia Bredli questions...

tigergenesis Oct 13, 2004 12:14 PM

I have decided that I would like my next addition to my collection to be a Centralian Python. I am, however, having a bit of a hard time finding information on care. I've only really found one caresheet that says temps should be 85 cool and 90 warm, but no mention of humidity requirements. The only other information I've found says they are generally a docile species, good eaters, average 5-6 feet and are semi-arboreal.

Does anyone have any additional information that may be of help? Particularly, is what I've found correct? I'd also like to know how big these guys get girthwise?. I'd also love to see pics if anyone else owns one of these guys.

Thanks!

I love my centralians. You can check out my care page on my website and ask me any more questions you may have. They are very hardy pythons. There was probably no mention of humidity made, because they have pretty low humidity requirements as they are from the arid interior of Australia. Good luck with your future bredli, you won't be dissappointed.

Thank you! After reading your care sheet, the only other questions I have are:

Would a 48x24x18 (lxwxh) cage do well for an adult?
Is there much of a size difference between males and females?
Is there a 'danger' zone of humidity to watch out for?
How 'thick' do they get (for example, as big as a soda can, etc)?

You have some real beauties! HOw old/long are your Centralians?

Thanks for you help.

The cage size you described is great for an adult. That is about the same size I have my adults in. I haven't thought too much about humidity because I live in Utah, where there is no humidity, but I suppose if you live in a very humid climate, you'd want to have plenty of ventilation to keep the cage on the dry side. Females get a bit larger than males, at least in girth. I also keep ball pythons, and the centralians are much funner and have more personality. But I like ball pythons too. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

You have a great collection!

Pythons are by far my favorite - you'd never guess by looking at what is in my collection. It's just most of my favorites are quite pricey. But I've been trying to decide between a Centralian or an Irian Jaya Carpet....so far I think I'm leaning towards the Centralian - maybe I'll eventually have both.

I certainly love my Ball Python - compared to a bp, what kind of girth does a Centralian have?

They will eat anything. I feed mine adult rats, mice, chicks, hamsters, whatever is around. They will eat just about anything. They get around 8 feet long and are not as girthy in proportion as a ball, but get thicker than a ball (if that makes sense).

I'm sold! I'll be heading to hopefully pick up a 2 month old from Don Hamper at the All Ohio show next weekend (the 23rd).

What's good size housing to put a 2 month old in (he said they're eating ft fuzzies once a week)? I have 6qt, 15qt and 32 qt Sterilite tubs (very little height), and a Sterilite storage tub that's about the same as a 10 gallon (height included),as well as a 50 gallon breeder tank (I started my ball python in this tank when he was 2 months old and just added plenty of cover/hides). I'm not sure which to start with?

Give them something secure. I don't anticipate you having any problems with feeding, as it is a bredli, so pick your favorite cage and just make sure to give your snake appropriate hides and thermogradient. I gave my hatchlings a 12" X 15" (LXW) cage with about 6" height for the first few months. You won't regret getting a bredli!
