Amelanistic fasciata in classifieds...

PiersonH Oct 13, 2004 03:30 PM

Did anyone else see these? I'm not a fan of amelanistics but I have to say these are pretty neat. However, I don't know who would pay anywhere near their asking price for a Nerodia. I am glad to see someone has actually taken the time and effort to breed a Nerodia morph and establish them in captivity.

Here is the URL but I don't know how long the ad will run:

I think I'll stick with my melanistic easterns. Give the amel. bandeds a few years and there will be a ton of them out there.

Agreed. Then they'll be as cheap as free.

That is, of course, assuming that people will actually have enough interest to continue to breed the morph.

I agree with you both, but it's not the fact that it's a watersnake but the fact that it's rare that makes them worth the price. Like you said in a few years they will be down yet being albino they won't fall below $100 each. And that will be a number of years away before they are that common. Think about it. Most people don't even know they exist. The one you saw for sale in the classifieds is one of the first. The father of that baby is the albino florida watersnake that you and I have seen in the garter and watersnake manual for years. And I mean years! And not until now have any of us that I know of have ever seen one let alone for sale. That's why I bought him. It's price is irrelevent since he is now the foundation of my future albino watersnake project. I agree as a pet it would be to pricey, but as a breeder, it was a steal. That money will come back time and again. That's why it cost so much. It's in the breeding stage of development. and it won't get to pet stage bringing them down to $100 or so for quite a few years.

If they are the ones that I'm thinking of, Ben Seigal had them. I also was were he picked them up in Daytona and saw them in person! Ha ha...eat my dust...lol They are gorgeous for sure! Would be a great investment...if I could afford it...

Great investment? One litter from a big female would probably saturate the market for them. Have you seen what the price has done on all the amel Thamnophis? And people liked garters before there were morphs!

Where are the people capitalizing on the amel transversa and rhombifer? The owners probably killed those animals or sold them to someone who did.

Sometimes it's sad to be a Nerodiaphile.

I just got back from the Chicago herp show and I'm pretty sure the *ONLY* snake worth breeding any more is a color morph of the Ball Python.

All other species are no longer interesting in any way....
