We definitely need to do some more work with these.

Hi Terry,

I love that picture. Something about that snake up at the top of it's cage peeking from behind it's coil seems to sum up Spilotes perfectly. I'm house hunting right now and if I end up with a big herp room I could see keeping a pair of these. It's been a long time since I've worked with them. I guess I've forgotten how messy they can be

Regarding the cage, is that plastic pegboard? If it's regular pegboard what is it sealed with and how has it held up?

By "we" do you mean the ratsnake community or "we" as in your and your family?

If it's the former, I'm actually under the impression that there's a fair amount of people breeding these. Maybe it's just the same few people over and over again.

Here's a pic of the whole cage. It has regular pegboard in the back and the top. The 2 sides and front are mesh. The front is two doors which latch in the middle and swing out. Either door can be opened independently of the other. The floor is plywood.
I housed both the male and female in this cage. They never rubbed or got up close to the mesh for some reason.

"we" stands for the herp community.

What are the dimensions on that thing? It seems to take up most of the vertical space on that wall.

How do you keep up the humidity in that thing with the mesh and pegboard taking up all the sides but front and bottom?

Spilotes seem to fare better if the cage is as open-air as you can get; at least it appears that way for most w/c and LTC ones. I keep 2 large bowls in the bottom which they can soak in if they want to. I mist them several times a week and that has worked well for me. I just have my water spray bottle and mist them through the mesh. Hopefully it mimics a tropical rain or mist.

The dimensions are approx. 56inches wide X 20inches deep X 48inches tall. It sits on another rack system. The bottom of the spilotes cage is about 5 feet from the floor and the cage rises to a few inches from the ceiling. That's about as arboreal as I can get them.

Nice, I've got a pair that I'm hoping to breed this next year. Probably one of the few snakes of mine that I haven't bred yet, well that and my albino checkered...and my namibian house snakes...lol But they could all be in business next year. My Spilotes were a little young this year, and the caging wasn't the best, but hopefully next year will be different. Keeping my hopes up...:D
