Is slowinski the name of the snake or the name you gave your particular snake? I've never heard about this type before... could someone maybe post more info on them? I'm still learning about all these different species of rats

You need to read up on the current taxonomy of the corn snake group. It was proposed that the corn snakes west of the Mississippi R. and east of the plains rats (emoryi) were a separate species, and named Pantherophis (Elaphe) slowinskii. However, most of us don't accept the species status and think of this form as a subspecies of guttata. I believe it will eventually be accepted as Pantherophis (Elaphe) guttata slowinskii, making four ssps. in the group, including guttata, emoryi, and meahllmorum, also. This is the most widely kept species of ratsnake in the hobby, making corn snakes very important to many of us. They seem to always be under study and new literature is sure to appear before long. A very good paper was done by Vaughan et al. in 1996. BTW, slowinskii was named after a herpetologist named Slowinski, would died from a snake bite in se. Asia a few years ago. There are many different variations of the corn and Great Plains rat. I'm currently interested in mostly the southern form of Great Plains rat.

Thanks Terry. This snake actually donated his blood to Vaughn and Dixon. I was fortunate enough to collect around 30-40 of these for blood work back in '98. I believe these to be a subspecies of guttata as well. I kept 1.2 and both females laid over 20 eggs last year, tieing them closer to guttata than emoryi IMO. I gave them a break this year but they will be ready to go again next.
Thanks for the info, Travis. Sorry I was away so long, but it gets busy a lot around here (out of town). I'm glad you found those snakes for the study. I can't wait to see the next round of lit. Post pics of the babies you get next year, please

yes, Joe Slowinski was a friend of mine, and died three years ago, on 9/11 in Burma while the rest of the world watched the coverage of the attacks in new york.

I never knew about him until his death, but sure do now. There was a special that showed him and the snake that bit him. I was in Thailand in the late 60's and feared going in the rice paddies because of those darn things. Sorry for your loss. TC.
This is a brazos co. male I just bought. I really love these guys.
