Your thoughts on jade plants

LordOfTheLizards Oct 13, 2004 10:20 PM

hey there, on sunday im getting a panther cham (either nosy be or ambanja, hopefully ambanja) and todai i went to get some supplies for the tank (for when hes up to 3-4 or so months of age) among lights and such i got a small jade plant, its far to small for use right now but it's still gonne be in there (they grow pretty fast) I just wanted to here your opinions on them

Tommorow i'm getting a small hibiscus to put in there, i also have some thin bamboo sticks for perches

also how do you siphone of water when the cham is in a small tank? i have the little dripper but if i fill all of it i need to use a BIG container in the bottom to get all the water and i wanted to know how you do it.

Also how do you maintain temps humidity in an all screen cage when u live in a cold and dry habitit (Canada in the winter, and its already getting cold and ma dad isn't gonna turn on the gas heater for like a month cuz hes cheap :P ), It's just I really want an all screen but I see my dad's argument sagainst it (temp humidity)

I want the set from scales premium exotic lizard and i wanna know if they ship to southern ontario

my biggets concerns are the temps and humiditys in an all screen cage, im sure it wont be TOO bad once my dad turns on the heat

Thanx

Hmm.. I have a jade (not in the cage) and I think they might be a little fragile for a cham to climb on. The leaves can bust off pretty easily.

As for temps/humidity, I know how you feel. I live in central Michigan and before they turned on the heat here I was wrapping a blanket around the cage to keep it warmer. Now it's plenty warm enough, but humidity is still a problem because the air is drier now and the heater doesn't give off humidity. I'm thinking of setting some jugs of water next to the heater and hoping they evaporate. Or if you have a humidifier, that'd work even better.

they actaully don't grow all that fast, but regardless, their leaves will snap with minimal pressure. Also b/c they are succulents they can rot if they stay too wet for too long. It would look cool but don't think it is too practical.

As for water build up my suggestion would be not to fill the dripper all the way up. I never do that for Luna. Fill it up enough for it to drip to the capacity of your catch basin. The cham doesn't need it dripping all day. Oh, and for any siphoning I use a turkey baster - works great and cost a dollar or two.

How old is the one you are getting? Here are some things that I do for temp and humidity - I live in NH (cold dry). I have Luna's cage set into a freestanding closet (with doors off so only three sided and no top). I place a towel on the back screen to catch stray spray, etc. I bought a cheap shower curtain liner, cut it into 3 pieces and on either side I have them attached. At night I put another across the door to maintain humidity. It works out quite well. You can use a humidifier on or in the cage (Sunbeam makes a great small one) and your basking and UVB light will keep temps up. Mercury Vapor Bulbs give off heat as well as UVB. I'll take some pix to show what I am talking about in setup. Also keeping dense foliage will help maintain humidity. I have a veiled so I don't know the humidity requirements of panthers (although almost 2 years on this forum you would think I should! LOL!). Don't get me wrong, maintaining humidity is not easy in our cold dry winters but these suggestions should help some.

As for Scales just email them to see if they ship to CN.

I am in Ontario also. My cage is thin plywood on the back and sides, and 1/4" plastic screen/mesh stuff for the door and top. Orion loves it and it does give enough circulation. Word of advice, ONLY use one side and the top screen. I spent a crapload on foggers, and humidifiers and everything to keep the humidity up and i ended up with a tropics room. very uncomfortable.
I would also suggest a warm mist humdidifier to use during jan/feb when it is crazy dry.
