Hey Cable,
That guy sure does look like the pic of a douglassi, but their range only extends to central Idaho according to Sherbrooke. Hernandesi's range extends to Nebraska though. Perhaps one of the subspecies? Before the split of douglassi and hernandesi, that one was known as Phrynosoma douglassi breviroste, the Eastern Short-Horned Lizard. (1992, Audobon field guide of North American Reptiles and Amphibians) Now, according to many internet sources, subspecies for this lizard have been sunk. Only the distinct species, hernandesi and douglassi remain. I would think that that little guy looks more douglassi than hernandesi, but I could be wrong. My two cents.
Best,
-Phil
given area of capture, I would conclude P. Hernandesi.
according to Sherbrooke's Introduction to Horned Lizards of North America, P. Hernandesi has 5 subspecies, all varying widely with geography.
