Species List: Varanidae

ucsda Oct 14, 2004 01:17 AM

I need to know if anyone can send me an accurate count and/or list of all the family species AND subspecies of Varanidae (acanthurus, albigularis, salvator, griseus...and the rest with subspecies). Common names would help as well; although many have different names, I know the whole concept is confusing. Thanks for your time.

Hi,
This is often a contestable point of view as to which are species, subspecies and so on...but two good comprehensive reviews of the Varanidae are as follows:

1. Bohme, W. 2003. Checklist of the living monitor lizards of the World. Zoologische Verhandlingen, Leiden 341:1-43.

2. Pianka, E.R., D.R. King, R.A. King. 2004. Varanoid Lizards of the World. Indiana University Press, Bloomington. 588p.

#2 is more complete than is #2 as a few more species/subspecies are included there-in, but both are very resources to help you answer your question.

Good Luck,
mbayless
