i went to lowes yesterday to price melamine. they didnt have 8x4 sheets so i continued looking. i found rubbermaid melamine shelfing already cut and edges in 48" sheets. has anyone ever used these? all i would have to do it buy 4 to do my enclosure and screw them together. they were like $8. is that a good price? also, if you know what im talking about they had black shelfing there too, but it wasnt in the 4' sheet. do they make it? any help would be great.

I know what you are referring to, but have never seen them in black. Mostly just white and oak colors. There is always the random google to see if others make similar products though.

I have used a similar product for racks and cages. Typically when my design requires slightly more than one full sheet of material.

It is more expensive. You could by a full sheet of melamine for $28, have it cut into 8 boards at 1'x12" and use about $3 worth of iron-on edge banding to cover the exposed edging. That would be about $4 per board compared to $8 per board.

However, the edge-banding on the pre-cut shelves is applied with a very expensive machine and is attached better than any iron on job you can do youself.

Also, the edges are professionally jointed for a very smooth and square edge.

And I believe the melamine coating is slightly thicker on many of these shelving products, therby making it more water-resistant.

In a nutshell, I say go for it.
