Unusual Garter found in PA

5hawn Oct 14, 2004 09:00 AM

This garters color was not justified by the bad photo. It had a mix of colors between the scales when in the sunlight. It appeared gravid so I immediately released it. The white head was something I couldnt explain either (didnt appear ready to shed). Maybe it was piebald, but I dont know. Anyone ever find anything remotely similiar to this in the wild?

WOW! That is different, I'd have given anything for a find like that. Its pretty late for a PA garter to be gravid, most bear in July and August; but maybe you found it a while ago? Anyway, cool snake. I'm in PA and I never saw one like it.

I have seen similar garters in the Poconos. Was that where the animal was collected?

I also found a snake like that only it was a water snake. I found the animal on my last trip to the Poconos. The darn thing must have bit me 10 times.
