my baby mali

lola44 Oct 14, 2004 09:53 AM

Hi all, I'm fairly new here and I've only had my baby since Sept. 12th. I have a few questions,,, he/she was 'born' in June and is pretty tiny. Maybe 5" but eating well and everything so I"m not too concerned about that. What I'm wondering is when can I put him on sand? He's on non-slip shelf-liner right now and I know that they like to burrow and dig but I was warned about impaction when they are small. Also, right now he's getting a mixture of collard greens/endive/dandelion greens topped with either frozen veggie (chopped small and thawed--green beans, peas, lima beans) or rep-cal juvie iguana pellets. I know that some people provide a dish of bird seed and dried lentils/split peas. How old or what size should he be before I offer this? Thanks for any replies. L.

The care sheet I was given for babies from a reputable breeder says that the babies should be kept on paper, etc. until they are 6-12 months old. I think it really depends on their size, though I am not sure.

As for the finch food, I am not sure, I have been recommended to use the dry, tiny colored pellets sold as finsh/canary food, then switching to juvenile iguana pellets, then aduls, but only to feed them this once a week. I would imagine the switches would take place about the same time as the substrate change. That is just my guess though.

I hope that is somewhat helpful.
