How can you tell if your Beardie is overweight..??

zz Oct 14, 2004 11:36 AM

I don't have a scale to weigh her just yet but she seems to be overweight to me. I am getting one, but in the mean time, what weight should she be?

She is about 3 months old, she has a big round belly and eats a lot of food (I think)...
Typical daily intake:
handful of greens (Spring Mix)
tablespoon of viggie/pellet mixture (frozen veggies, RepCal pellets)
10-15 canned Mini Crickets
5-7 Silkworms
Vitamin powder.
**I switch things out a bit depending on what is on sale at the local grocery...sometimes she has this AND some fruit
(Is that a lot?)

Can she still get her stomach off the ground if she wants to? Does she have fat rolls? If not I'd say she's probably fine. Weights on dragons vary greatly so I can't give you an exact number, adults can range anywhere from 300 grams to over 1000 and be healthy, it all depends on the individual dragon.

I think she can still get her belly off the ground. She still runs away from me when I try to get her out and it looks like she has her belly off the ground. When she lounges, she is taking on a "jabba-da-hut" look that has me worried.(I know I porbably spelled that all wrong). It looks like her belly is hanging over.

False alarm I guess... Thanx

well at 3 months age I do not think this should be a real problem. from 0 to about 9 months age is when they do about 90% of all the growth to reach adult size.

so think of this like a baby with "Baby fat"

with good levels of heat and light any fat will be used up in a few weeks. a 3 month old should still be sheding about 2-3 times a month as I recall... at least it seemed to me that untill my BD got to about 9 months that he was eating every thing I gave him and you could almost see him grow every few days.

at 3 months your bd should be very active during the day and ready to eat all the time.
and pooping often also.

She does eat all the time. I am trying to get her used to being handled, so I give her worm treats when I get her out. If I don't give her enough food in the morning...she will dig in her bowl while we are having dinner (her aquarium is in the kitchen). She is pretty active during the day she begins to slow down about 5-6 every night...then at 8:30 she passes out.
