Good Weight for a Ball Python

CJBianco Oct 14, 2004 04:13 PM

Can anyone tell me what an average good weight for a Ball Python that is five (5) months old?

This is really bugging me. I see ads all the time for female Ball Pythons that are one or two YEARS old that are around 400 - 500 grams. Plus, they claim these may be ready for breeding next season. Do they really grow that fast? 1000 grams in under a year??? I've never bred Ball Pythons, and I've only been doing this for a short time, so I have no clue if this is possible or not.

Thanks for the Info,
Chris

massive weight gains are very possible. I have a 02 female that i acquired 5 months ago. she was just under 500 grams when i received her. with heavy feeding she is now 1100 grams and still feeding as much as i will feed her. last month alone she gained 250 grams. btw her feed schedule is 2 small/med rats every 5 days. but back to the other question. there is no real average weight for young snakes as they all grow differently depending on hatch weight, temps, and genetics. in general all but one of my 04 female babies are in the 200-300 range. the one that isn't in that range is just a monster already 470 grams on the exact same feed schedule as the rest of my babies so who knows, maybe someone who has been doing this longer than me can add more actual data.

Yeah. My two girls are '04 babies and they're already past the 400 grams mark. I'll still wait until 2006 to breed them, even if they get big by next winter. I don't want any health problems.

I was really just wondering about a 750 gram female I may get. I guess by your response she may be breedable by next year...hopefully.

Thanks,
Chris

right now i have 3 females that will go for next year and 2 more that may (they are in the 500 gram range). my largest female the one that is 1100 may go this year but i doubt i will hook her up with anything allowing her another year to gain some weight. I am also in the market for animals in the 600-800 gram range for next year breeders, after all i have my 2 het pied males that will go next year and my albino het and citrus ghost het could possibly go this year. I have my fingers crossed for next year, i should have soo many 50%'s i won't know what to do. the next 3-4 years will be exciting to say the least.
