water dragons sore eyes

gemdreamer Oct 14, 2004 05:25 PM

i recently aquired several dragons and they were fine, but now im noticing that a couple of them have sore eyes, ive tried almost everything.

the eye looks likes somewhat swollen at first and then it shut, but there is no puss or anything like that no discharge. i have tried cleaning it with warm water, which it does open for awhile and when i check again its closed.

any comments/suggestions?? could it be the substrate? they have UVB they have a basking light they ahve a large thing of water to get into, they are eating dusted crickts and eating greens. i dont understand whats going on...

Thanks for any help, shari

Are you sure they are sore or swollen? Dragons will close their eyes if they are stressed or scared, if they are unhappy in their cage or sick they may sit around with their eyes closed. What kind of substrate are you using? Anything dusty can irratate their eyes, and since more than one dragon is having the problem it is probably environmental, either substrate or stress.

well i am using a repti bark, but not all of the dragons are having this problem. only two and its like how a turtles eyes get from lack of vitamin. but i am using a calcium supplement and reptivit.

they will open if i take warm water and a soft cloth and gently clean them. any suggestions would be great.

another thing is one of the dragons, he opens his mouth and i checked to see if it was just too warm but that doesnt seem to be the problem and its not becuase im sticking my hands in their cage, because he does it when im not putting my hands in there...

im just new to water dragons, i got them given to me and im trying to make them better.

thanks
