Is this an Elaphe/Pantherophis or is it a Lampropeltis???

subrahmanya Oct 14, 2004 05:39 PM

First i thought it is an Elaphe schrencki schrencki, but now I am not so sure. And i begin to think it is a Lampropeltis getulus californiae. Even tough the bands on his body are disordered. I have 2 other elaphe's who live together in the same box. I tried to put this one with the other two, but when 1 of them approach this one, this one bit him twice. So i thought, ok, its a Lampropeltis. And i put him in his own box to live on his self. But when he feels intimidating, he rattle with his tail. And i tought only Elaphes do this. Can some one tell me what kind of snake this is??

Thanks,

Subrahmanya

Looks like Lampropeltis to me. Both genera rattle the tail when disturbed. Other genera that do this include Coluber, Masticophis, Drymarchon, Pituophis, Arizona, & all of North American venomous snakes except the corals.
