Keeping Mealworms, but not breeding them

Spotted_Leopard Jun 28, 2003 12:13 PM

When I found out the mealworms turn into biting beetles, I decided I would find a way to prevent that from happening. Ok, here's my plan, and tell me if it works!

Three days before the leopard gecko comes home with me, have the mealworms ready(with bedding, ect), and refridgerate them. Take out a few, around six, put them in a different container and gut load them. That'll be a day before the leopard gecko arrives. Then, I would feed the mealworms to it the next day, and as soon as the leo is finished eating, then I would take out a few more worms from the fridge and gut load them. It goes on and on.

That would minimize the chances of breeding occuring, right? I would rather buy a lot, like 3000 from a supplier, and just go with that. Sorry if I sound lazy, but the idea of breeding beetles just doesn't agree with me. Please tell me if that would work. Thanks in adance...Jaz

That would be fine, but I just like to keep them in a bin with their gutload from the moment I get them. To prevent breeding, just keep them in a cooler room (slows down growth) or when you find the pupae (stage between mealie and beetle), just throw them out. The beetles don't bite (if they do, I haven't felt it yet) and you won't have a population explosion over night so its nothing to worry about.
