Something's wrong (yet again) with my resuced iggy... WHAT IS THIS?? **PIC**

Charlotte Oct 14, 2004 08:18 PM

Oh man.
I fear that by rescuing this iguana, that I have gotton in way over my head.
This is my iggy...

Some of you may remember my first problem a few weeks ago with the bloating and inability to poo .
Well, we got that out of the way. We are now eating awesomely, and pooping turds like clockwork.

But now, another problem has arised!!

I noticed this a week or so ago...
Discolored patches on his skin. I didn't pay too much attention to it at the time because I was so focused on the bowel movements and making sure he had proper food in his belly, now the patches have become DRAMATICALLY darker and seem to be spreading.

Pics here:

(yes, I know he's still very skinny, we're working on it...at least he's not swollen and bloated like a balloon anymore.)

And a closer up image...

C'mon people, please say it isn't more bad news (although I fear it is...) ... :/

Anyone know?
Help?

It kind of looks like burn marks to me. Possibly from a heat lamp?

those are probably just patterns on the iguana that it will devolop. same for the legs, but you might want to feel the dicoloration on the legs and if it feels different from the other skin it is probably a burn.

I'm trying to think of how an iguana would be able to burn both its legs but not its back on a heat lamp. I'm going with some sort of skin infection. Either way, you should put neosporin on it and watch it closely.

I had thought it was a burn once I dismissed skin infection.. but you have a point.. both legs but none of it's back?

I'll support this.. probably a skin infection.. shame too.. some gorgeous colors on it.

I think it is vet time. Personally if my ig had that going on I would suspect infection but having no idea what sort you don't know if you want to treat for fungal or bacterial. I would, to start, use something like a chlorhexidine scrub or wash with betadine and air dry. I would mind the humidity isn't too high and that the place is very clean.
I am also wondering if the bloat problems earlier are clear or not and this skin thing is manifesting a more serious systemic infection.
I didn't follow the first posts so I don't know. Is it eating and growing now? Is it good and hot without haveing access to burn itself? I don't think that looks like a burn. Unless it is a chemical burn....did you just clean with bleach or something that may not have rinsed out all the way?
Just ideas to toss around.

Haven't we warned you about tampering with the structure of a chaotic system?

This is iggy rot. I had an iguana that had this, it's a type of gangreen, though it's usually on the tail. You need to take him to the vet .

I remember my 13 yr old iguana having a similar problem like that on his tail. The problem was that he wasn't shedding properly. I would definitely take him to the vet.

I give you props for rescuing him though. I've considered doing the same, but my iguana is a little on the jealous side when it comes to other iguanas. And he's so big, we let him have free reign of the house and I don't see how that would work. How many iguanas have you rescued?
