White's Tree Frog substrate.

FroggyToads Oct 14, 2004 09:27 PM

I own two WTF's and I was just wondering what everyone else uses for substrate. I use potting soil topped with paper towels and some moss.

Thanks

I use 100% organic coconut grounds. I love them! The pass very eailsy, and I dont have to worry about pesticides or the risk of fertilizer that potted soil has. I would like some live moss, though. I have TONS up at my cottage where absolutly NO fertilizer is used, but what about the little bugs in it? How do I get rid of them, or should I just not take any?

Why worry about the bugs? When I first added live moss to a terrarium, I found that it was full of snails, ants, slugs, millipedes and just about everything else. I watched them for a while and noticed that the ants set up a colony but eventually died (since there's really nothing to eat for ants). The millipedes and 'slaters' (those little oval-shaped flat grey bugs you find under rocks and stuff) were seen on several occasions eating frog crap! I suppose they just crap the crap, but it's smaller crap! The only problem I had is with the slugs. They'll eat new growth off just about any live plant.
Funny though, in my vivarium with a WTF, all the bugs are now gone. I suspect the frog cleaned up what he saw.

There are basically no worries regarding bugs, for the bugs in the mosses around here anyway (N.B. Canada).

Hope this helps!
