Can you mend a broken tail?

rugbyman2000 Oct 14, 2004 09:44 PM

My rescue, Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, just got in an adorable, loveable beardie. He is awesome, but his tail is all bent up. I don't think it's effecting his health, except for restricting use of his tail, because he seems healthy in every other way. He's being placed with someone with a HUGE heart for banged-up beardies with bent tails and missing toes.

But here's my questions . . . is there any way to treat a broken tail on a beardie? And does a broken tail have negative long term effects on beardies? And can I guess their tails don't break off as a defense mechanism like most lizards since so many of them have their original broken tails?

Any ideas, please let me know!

Thanks
Jesse

You have done a great thing in taking this little one in! Unfortunatly, the broken/kinked tails do not usually straighten out. However, the usually dont affect them at all, but possibly mess their balance up A LITTLE, but they WILL adapt no doubt. Again, you have done a great thing.

Can't tell ya much about a broken tail, but my baby was hatched with no tail. She has a little nubby butt, and is a little off balance, but getting much better. They adjust well! Great job with the rescue group too. I'd love to start a bearded dragon rescue.

No way to mend them that I've seen.. No they do not break off normally as a defense mechanism.. in fact one of the quickest ways to secure adults sometimes is the grab the base of the tail if they're about to run into some danger (IE right off the bed)

It doesn't effect the bearded in any way, and even with a broken tail I can call my stubs "Cute" and everyone would agree with me
