Blue Tongues Fasting???

BrandonR Oct 14, 2004 10:04 PM

Hey,

Ive got a BTS, uhh.. ive had him fro probably a little over a year. Hes currently in my living room in a 30 gal tank, with jungle park as his substrate.

Hes got hide box, heat lamp, etc.

For the last (its seems) like a month or so and maybe more he hasnt been eating ANYTHING, that i can see.. I provide him with fesh vegetables regularly, and hes always got access to meal worms. Ive tried canned dog foor, (nutro LITE formula for dogs. That was recomended to me in a previous post of mine)

He hasnt seemed to be eating anything. I dunno if they are prone to this.

Hes as feisty as hes always been (never enjoyed being touched. ALWAYS hisses ) hes never stopped that. But im just wondering about this situation.. if u need more filler informantion ask about what u need to know and ill tell u what i can.

Thanks all

Brandon

This is a male Tanimbar

In my experience, blue tongues get bored with their diet. If I feed my standard skink mix of 60% veg/fruit and 40% dog food for too long, they just seem to get fed up with it, even if I vary the ingredients. Funnily enough, my male Tanimbar is the worst for this.

I would suggest taking all food away for say three days, then offering a bowl of lightly cooked, still warm scrambled eggs. I often mix some (defrost) frozen peas in with this, and my Tanimbar loves it! I have easy access to really cheap free range (organic) eggs, and I alternate between this and the skink mix.

Either that, or try defrost pinkies or (fresh or defrost) garden snails. Blue-tongues won't turn their nose up at any of these.

Mark.

ps. I only found out this year that garden snails freeze really well. If you collect a bucket full during wet weather or whatever, keep them for a few days in a container, so that they void their stomach contents, and then freeze in tuppperware boxes. I defrost them in a container of hot water, and the skinks are at the front glass as soon as I walk in the room!

It could be the seasons changing. I'm gonna be brumating soon. I have noticed that my skinks' appetites fluctuate.

YOU GUYS HAVE TANIMBARS????? I LOOVE Tanimbars. Do you have pics. My tanny is the one on the right.

If he is a wild caught specimen, then this may be from stress of either too much handling, or maybe he wants a girl. another reason that your bluetongue may be fasting, well, i give mine a diet of gastropods, veg, puppy food and fruit. try a mixed diet. also try giving him more granite in the enclosure
