Got Ptyas?

Matt Campbell Oct 14, 2004 10:40 PM

Hello,

I am expecting within the week some Lesser Indian Ratsnakes [Ptyas korros - a.k.a. Indo-Chinese Ratsnake, Dhaman/Dharman Ratsnake]. For those of you who don't know Ptyas, check out this url for photos: http://www.calacademy.org/research/herpetology/myanmar/GetImagesByName.asp?Genus=Ptyas&Species=korros
I'm supposed to be receiving 2.3 of these. Once I've gotten them acclimated and treated for parasites I'm hoping to get them settled in and breed them next year. I'm currently working on getting translations of two articles written in Vietnamese on their captive care and breeding. Needless to say it's pretty exciting to be getting to work with a snake that is practically unheard-of in the trade. A search of www.isis.org also shows that currently only one zoo in the world [at least only one zoo that reports data to isis], houses Ptyas korros. I will of course post photos once they have arrived.

Hi Matt,

My girlfriend was raised in Vietnam and I can get her to help with the basics of the translations. She's a doctor so I believe she'll understand the scientific aspects of the articles.

I'd be glad to help. Just put me first on the list for some babies

Seriously, I'll help regardless.

Chris,

I actually sent you a message through Kingsnake regarding another post of yours about Ptyas from a while back - of course this was before coming back to look and see that you'd already replied. When you get that other message, if you could include your email address and we can work out my sending you copies of the articles. I'm also waiting for another article from a Chinese journal, so I'm sure when that comes in I'll probably be looking around for people to help with the translation on it as well. It's kind of cool to be on the ground floor of working with a species that hardly anyone else has done anything with. As for babies, I'll put you on the steadily growing list.

We seem to be just missing each other. You're sending me an e-mail regarding the previous thread, I'm replying to this thread. I'm replying to your e-mail, and you're here replying to my post.

Well at least we're finally in touch

Feel free to send the articles. I can get basic caging, temperature data to you right away. The full translation could take awhile since I'm very busy with house hunting at the moment.

Three weeks ago I obtained a slightly over three foot male. So far he is doing exceptionally well. He is kept at 76-78*F. I have him on aspen and he has a chunk of cork bark for a hide. As of yet I have not seen much of him though as he spends all daylight hours under the bark. However I dropped two live fuzzy mice in with him on three occasions and each morning they are gone.

As to temperment, he has bit (but not held twice as I lifted him but then settles down. He is decidedly racer like in his actions though.

I tried filling out the requisite form but that did not go through either. Check your junk/spam folder and add that address to your contacts.

Chris,

I cleared your email so you should be able to send me messages no problem. You didn't say which would be the best way to send you the articles - jpgs or snail-mail copies? Send me email or reply here and I'll get the articles off to you.
