I use the clipboard to keep a record of harvest quantities from each pan. Ideally, when I see a pan that's not producing well over maybe a 3-month period, I will break it down and replace it with new breeders. However, since I usually don't have breeders ready at any time, I will plan to just replace all breeders somewhere around 9 - 12 months of age. If, looking at the clipboard, I see they are all still producing strongly with the exception of a few pans, I will keep them longer. I don't like to replace breeders because when I break a rack down and set up new breeders it's about 6 - 7 weeks before I'm harvesting from that rack again plus the first litters are usually smaller in number.

OK, I give up. Just how many rats and mice does that set up churn out?
DeMak
When the last rack is set up I will have 119 pans. Some have 1.3 but most have/will have 1.4. The colony should produce at least 4000 each month. I'm only set up for mice right now but when I find another location to set up another room I will start breeding rats there.

Do you have buyers for 4000 a month?
DeMak
Yes, I have buyers for 4000 a month. I know a snake guy who will take 1000 a week. He has a couple hundred snakes plus he sells some to people who have bought snakes from him. I also have a few other customers. Mice seem to be in demand in my area and rats are even more wanted. People ask me when I will start breeding rats but I can't until I get a second building/room.
The worst thing about this business is that I could lose my whole colony to disease as I did about 4 months ago. I'm just now almost back to full production and much wiser about keeping everything disease-free. Any transport containers or other items that come into the room are disinfected with bleach solution and more importantly, I make 100% sure that NO wild rodents enter the room from outside.....that's how I lost the last colony.

the holding pans,
what size pan do you use ?
how many in each,?
how long do they stay in there for to reach the sizes you require?
how many female breeders do you have to produce 4000,?
how many sacks of food do you use ?
sorry for all the Q
