Stupidest Question asked ever !!!

dragonflygirl109 Oct 15, 2004 09:05 AM

I have a indo BTS. I am having trouble finding worms at my local pet stores etc. It also seems no one carries snails. I know it's really not good to collect them from outside because you don't know where they have been but what if you boiled them? Would that kill anything that might be dangerous? Would the BTS even eat them boiled?

I've heard that as long as you collect them from where you are certain their are not pesticides, etc and then feed them greens for a few days that is of help to 'clean them out'.

What about the fish department of petstores? Most of them sell apple snails (mystery snails), etc. They may special order for you if you ask. One of my petstores lets me have their freshwater pond snails (they are kept in a tank with the live plants they sell) for free because they tend to become pests to them.

As far as the worms, you can always order online or maybe try a local reptile show to see if there is a vendor that sells them there. Or again, see if a petstore will order them for you.

Look at a bait shop...the kind that fishermen use for their minnows and worms and stuff!

I collect snails from my back garden and feed to my blue tongues. I don't use any garden chemicals however.

You could try freezing them. Collect a big batch of them, keep them in an old tank for two or three days, so that they void their stomach contents, and then put them straight in the freezer in a plastic box. My skinks take these (once defrosted) really well, but they are not so keen on the de-shelled Can o Snails, which are really expensive anyway (at least in the UK).

This doesn't get round the issue of chemical contamination, but would kill any worms/parasites.

As an aside, I really don't think that any parasite in a wild garden snail from Europe or North America could infect tropical/semi-tropical reptiles from Australasia. But the freezing method is really good for storing snails, and if you have friends/neighbours who want rid of garden snails, you can offer a disposal service!

Cheers,
Mark.
