Rack Incubators...?

CJBianco Oct 15, 2004 09:09 AM

I see all these intricate designs for incubators (old refridgerators, etc) , and I was wondering why you couldn't just use a simple rack. For instance...if you placed your Sterilite inside of a nice little rack (e. Jason's Jungle Rack), couldn't you keep the temps stable using a proportional thermostat? And if you placed a large bowl (or two, etc) of water in it, wouldn't that keep the humidity high enough? You could even fashion a hinged door if need be.

I guess I'm just wondering why I don't see these. Is it a cost-effectiveness issue?

Intrigued by Incubation,
Chris

I would think you'd have stability problems. Flexwatt can't keep up if the room changes temperature rapidly, or too much. Humidity issues aside, eggs need to be incubated at a very precise temperature for a long time (about 60 days). If it varys too much for even a few hours you might lose the clutch. Keep in mind a clutch of morphs might be worth something in the tens of thousands of dollars. Want to risk that? If something very simple worked, believe me, people would be doing it.
