Gecko still not eating much

tim5580 Oct 15, 2004 09:10 AM

I upped the temp on the hot side of my tank to 93-95 F from 84F because the leo wasn't eating too much stuff. He is still eating, just not a lot. Its only taking like 2 or 3 crickets a night and maybe a mealworm. He is still pooping so I know he's eating and they aren't escaping. He still looks healthy, just shed, and not losing weight or gaining any. So, any ideas? I think he might not like the dust I put on his food, maybe I am putting to much? I put the bugs in a container with it and shake them until they are covered completely. His tail still looks about this fat, maybe a tiny little bit skinnier, but still bulges in middle.

It rubs the lotion on it's skin. It rubs the lotion on it's skin or else it gets the hose again.

He's a pretty new pet right? Give him a little more time to settle in. I had a leo that took about a month and a half to start eating. If she/he starts to lose weight and has unusual looking poo I would start to worry. Give him/her a little more time. Try a few wax worms just make sure to not feed to many as they get addicted to them easily.

I would not worry if it is not getting really skinny. My leopard gecko(s, at one time) never eat much. Everyone on here is saying that their leopard geckos eat so much and i like faint. My adult averages 1-3 crickets tops a day, or maybe 6 mealies on a REALLLY hungry day. I dont think it's a problem. Thats just my thought tho, anyone else's replies could help.

Yeah hes still only about a month or so in my possesion, not more than 2. I just get worried when I see every one else's eats so much and mine doesn't. Maybe I stressed him too much with daily handling. So I cut back to every other day.
3 of my mealworms turned into the little white bugs with legs they turn into before beetles, so now I have a mealworm breeding colony. By the way, how do you tell a boy from a girl mealworm or beetle? Or can't you.

You can't tell..I really wish you could!! You can use the link toward the bottom to find info on breeding mealworms if you need it. Deffinately cut back on handling. That can be a major issue that causes stress and the loss of appetite.
