Its a sad day

riiotgrrl Oct 15, 2004 03:53 PM

I lost all of the eggs that pricilla laid. It may be due to the homemade incubator...the temps werent as stable as i would have liked them to be. I am so bummed out. Pricilla on the other hand is recovering nicely. She is eating like she was bbefore, and plumping out again. I feel so bad that her body had to go through the strain that it did, and to no avail. I guess there is always next year to breed again. ...

Really, Soooooo sorry. I know you will see success next year. Breeding is a tricky thing, but your skills will grow. I think it is a great accomplishment to have eggs laid in the first place!

I have no experience in breeding, and I have a silly question. What is the real point of an incubator? Does the female "sit" on the eggs? Do you take the eggs away from the female to put them in the incubator? Since reptiles are "cold Blooded" animals, why an incubator anyway? In other words if a house is 75 degrees, whats the point of an incubator?

Dumb I know, but I always wondered this. I have many years experience in keeping snakes, but zero experience in breeding.

An incubator insures a temp within the range that will allow development of the snake embryo. With 50 days needed for this task, if your eggs are in a controlled environment you don't have to worry about unforseen temp variances that your house may go through during that period of time. It also allows for better control of humidity in a smaller space. This micro control will better your chances of successfully hatching snake eggs.

I doubt it was incubation problems. It is probable that the eggs weren't fertilized. Your male may not have been producing viable sperm since it hadn't been cooled adequately to stimulate spermatogenesis. The act of mating stimulated the female to produce the eggs in spite of the fact that they weren't fertilized.

Did you candle them? That would certainly have helped to figure out what the problem was.

At least you know they are old enough. Cool them down for a few months and next year you should be getting babies.
