Breeding tegus

viperbitex Oct 15, 2004 05:37 PM

I have 2 blue tegus I want to breed next year. They are HUGE!! about 3 1/2 feet each. There isn't a whole lot about blue tegus yet, and a lot of what people have on their sites contradics others. My question is if anyone knows if I have to hibernate both lizards for them to breed, or just the female??
Last summer, when I first got them, the male was all for breeding and the female wasn't. Also does anyone know the ideal temperature and length of hibernation for blue tegus??

I am no breeder but it is my understanding from discussions on here in the past that the tropical tegus (Blues and columbians) do not need hibernation at all to breed. I would say that if the male was already willing then see what happens with them next year. The people to ask would be bluetegu.com they are the largest breeder of blues that I am aware of. Good luck to you.

Yes they need to brumate, usually nov-feb. Just cut the lights back to 8 hrs and when they go to sleep they will rarely come out for anything.

Blue tegus do not need to be hibernated to reproduce .
The original bloodlines of the blues came out of Colombia .
It doesn't get cold in Colombia unless you go to areas that are high in altitude (this is a tropical country) and the tegus do not occur in the mountains .
Blue tegus do not like cold weather and we regularly reproduce them without ever hibernating them .

These tegus are not like Argentines which occur in an area which has definate winter /summer seasons.

so if you don't have to cool them, and have been mating you should expect eggs?? i have two blues they mate all the time that i have to seperate them because the male always wants to mate and ends up hurting the females neck area. how long should i wait before i should try them again?? also how can i get my male to stop attacking her so much??
