Silkworm question

Chameleo19 Oct 15, 2004 05:43 PM

I just had about 30 moths lay eggs for me and they all turned purple. They are currently in the fridge, now my instructions say to keep them in there for 9 weeks, can I remove some out before the 9 weeks and they will hatch or do I have to wait the full 9 weeks? If I have to wait the full 9 weeks, after that is up can I remove them as needed and keep the rest in the fridge for longer then the 9 weeks?

make sure they are black (or close) before putting in fridge - I always wait a few days just to be sure the embryo has developed.

check out this site as it has great info, lots of photos and makes it simple. In brief, yes they need several weeks in the fridge. I take out about 20 eggs at a time so I have a steady supply. MAKE SURE you will have chow or very young, tender mulberry leaves for their itty bitty mandibles when they hatch. Btw, hatch will take one-three weeks after removed from fridge and then they take awhile to get to a good feedr size so plan accordingly.
