Female able to produce two years in a row?

kylescott Oct 15, 2004 06:10 PM

How likely is a female ball wieghing 1300 grams able to get gravid in 2005 after she has already produced this year. I know a breeder that is selling her cheap and thats why I think she is cheap. Because the ball will probably not be interest in getting together with a male next year. Any advice or information would be great. Thanks

If they have adequate fat reserves, then yes, they can produce multiple years in a row, but it's all up to her really. There is no guarantee, but alot do produce multiple years in a row, without an off season (if they are fed well).

It might help if you could find out how much she weighed right before laying, when she laid, and if and what she is currently eating and how often.

She might be a small girl and she could be even bigger than when she laid (not likely but possible). Also, if she recently laid and is still eating well she could just be on a late schedule and could be gotten ready to breed late in the season.

Also, I have one that has produced 5 years in a row. She isn't a particularly big girl but gets a little bigger each year and produced her largest clutch (7) this year.

I had a female 19 month old lay 6 good eggs at 1370 grams when she was bred. That summer she gained weight to 1700 grams and layed six good eggs again. She rested the following year. I would not think that would be common though.
