Breeding Beardies

the_vindicator Oct 15, 2004 07:35 PM

I have a pair of bearded Dragons that are a litlle over a year old. My female has what feels like the beginging of egg bulges on her belly. My male has been trying to mate with her for at least a month, however i cant verify if they did mate or not. Can anyone tell me if its possible she could be pregnant? Can she have egg bulges without being pregnant?

Yes to both questions. First of all, she may be gravid with fertile eggs. And secondly, female beardies(and other lizards)can also produce infertile eggs without ever being with a male.
Hope this helps,

If you feel eggs, especially if you can see them, shes very gravid. You need to get a lay box ready and watch for signs that she's getting close (digging, restlesness, stopping eating, etc.). When she's ready put her in the lay box and let her do her thing. Gestation is only 20-30 days, so if they've been together for a month they're probably fertile. You also need to separate them. What do you plan to do with the eggs?

All i have is sand in their cage. Do you know if she will allow the male to mate with her despite not having a suitble place to lay her eggs? Can she be gravid at only a little over a year old? I should seperate the male from her? why? Should i change her diet any?

Yes, she can mate without a suitable place to lay eggs. She doesn't think about a nest site until she's nearly ready to lay. Yes, she can be gravid at that age. And definitely yes, separate her from the male. He can cause her undue stress to the point where her health may be jeopardized. And increase her calcium intake.

Is there any way to tell if the eggs are fertile or not? Thanks a lot for answering all of my questions.

Not that I'm aware of. But since you housed the two together, there's a good chance that they are.
