Is it really possable to devemonize rattlesnakes???

darcy Oct 15, 2004 08:24 PM

I'm talking about surgically and not just milking venom.
i don't plan on getting a rattler anytime soon but i saw some advertised and It made me curious.

I have much experience with large constrictors but the only venomous experience I have comes from arachnids and dart frogs.

once again I'm just curious but any help with this question would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance
Darcy

I believe it IS possible to do this. You cannot just remove the fangs though. they grow back. They would actually have to remove the venom gland.
But I think its a horrible idea!
If the snake ever gets loose or for whatever reason the person decides they cant keep it and release it, either way, it will die because it cant kill its food anymore. You would have to feed it prekilled food for the rest of its life. And pray nothing ever goes wrong and that it ends up on its own to starve to death.
I'm sure there would be a number of otehr problems that would come with it too. Like, this would be a major surgury on the anake. Theres a good chance it wouldnt even want to eat again after this! The stress, the pain afterwards, I dont think it is worth it really. If people want a snake that does not have venom, they should buy a NON venomous snake. Not take a venomous and remove its natural killing abilities just for thier own pleasure.
That is just my opinion though.

I wouldn't ask this question in the forums unless you want a ton of negative feedback information. Do yourself a favor and do a forum search for Venomoids. You will get all the information about this horrible procedure that way.

People do it all the time. It is a controversial subject among snake keepers. The actual snakes do not always survive the procedure, and there is question as to whether there are long term effects or not. Venomous snakes partly digest their meals before they swallow them with the use of proteins in venom, not having this may be unhealthy for them. You can buy them right and left and they are advertised on this site in the classifieds. Another unfortunate problem is that the procedure is often performed by amateures with little or no training and often a lack of proper pain medication.
