Humidity question.

wingert Oct 15, 2004 09:11 PM

Does the humidity need to be high even if there is a large water basin is in the enclosure? I have rudicolis and doreanus. They have enough room to soak and swim but I live in an area where the humidity is always very low. I can keep the humidity high but it requires almost constant spraying. They seem to soak and do fine so I think all is well but just playing it safe. I have humidity chambers and never have sheding problems. So, again does the humidity have to be perfect thru out the tank or does everything sound OK?

NO it doesn’t need to be high, in fact most keepers keep them to humid, if you make sure the water vessel is always clean and that your monitor has a humid hide, then the rest of the cage can be bone dry it will only be easier to heat and will prevent any moisture build up in and around your cage. The indo species (all the prasinus group included) love to soak, therefore the only way they can suffer from dehydration is if your water is dirty or excessive heated cage. I like to keep some moisture in my cages, first to control dust second to allow burrows.

Thanks. I change the water every day. They deficate in it every day. I just use tap water. Is that OK?

They? You have more then one in the cage? Be careful sometime one drowns the other, doesn’t happen often but when it does it’s a bummer! Also with time you will notice that its almost always the same monitor than uses the toilet first, this ultimately leads the other to health problems, a solution is to provide many bowls, monitors will choose clean water over dirty if given the chance. I don’t know about your but my tap water is excellent.

No worries. I have one per cage.
