HOOK WORMS??

rockheretic Oct 15, 2004 11:59 PM

I have two uros. The boy has stopped eating so I took him to a herp vet and they told me to bring in the girls feces to check for parasites. The girl is still eating fine. However, they found hook worms. I am to treat the worms with meds. I was wondering though if my substrate would indeed spread the parasites further. I am using sand as of right now. Should I use newpaper in the time being so the parasites cannot spread? I have never hate a reptile who has had these someone help me nurse my uros back to health!!

anytime i have had parasites in my reptiles, the vet always tells me to throw out my substrate, thoroughly clean the cage and put them on paper towels until their treatment is over

I have dealt with pinworms and coccidia in mine and each time I got rid of all substrate, thoroughly cleaned the cage every single day, and kept them on regular towels rather than paper towels. The towels were replaced every day and washed twice with bleach. I like the regular towels because it's easier to walk on, but paper towels are great. Newspaper is fine, but the ink is messy.

You definitely need to throw out your present substrate. For the next two weeks use paper towel or news paper and clean up any droppings and change temporary substrate immediately. Disenfect all furnishing with a 10% bleach mixture. Do not use any of the furniture not essential to the Uros well being until the parasite is defeated. If you are not thourough you will be fighting this battle all over in a month. Do you have a follow up deworming in two weeks? Did the vet say anything at all about cage hygiene?
