Help! Something is wrong with my FBT

toby1331 Jun 28, 2003 02:41 PM

Th other night I thought my toads had laid eggs. I looked into my tank today and it looked like one of my frogs was shedding its skin. It was clear with lots of black dots in it and coming off of the toads body. I looked at another one of my toads and he is missing one of his front hands. What is happening???? Please Help!!!

The clear stuff is most likely skin, whats do you mean he was missing his front hand?

Are they suppose to shed their skin?? Another one of my toads (he is the smallest one in my tank) is missing his front hand.

I know he had it less then a week ago. Thats when I changed their cage. On some of the moss that is in their tank I found what looked like blood. Right now I have them all in seprete little tanks. I wasn't sure what was going on with the skin shedding. I had never seen them do it before. His stump is no longer bleeding and he seems to be swimming fine. Should I keep him by himself? They have been ribbiting a lot lately and hanging onto each other. (They have never mated before)

I would at least keep him separated from the others. Keep his set up and water scrupulously clean. You may even want to use wet paper towels in his set up so you can keep a closer eye on whether or not its bleeding and/or oozing any kind of discharge. Will also help keep his wound clean. I personally would also take him to vet for antibiotics and/or other meds he may need.

Is it possible that one of my other toads did this?

waldo Jun 28, 2003 08:54 PM

There is a good chance that another toad bite his hand off.You said they have been ribbiting and hanging on to each other alot lately,do they all ribbit?only the males make noise and its possible that they have been trying to mate with each other, maybe somebody got upset.Good luck with you little toad,he should be ok.

THey have been hanging onto the back legs of each other atot more lately. How long should I keep is seperate from the others for?

ginevive Jun 29, 2003 06:06 AM

I would probably keep the handless one seperate permanently, so that he can feed easier and not face too much competition from the other toads. Maybe thyey got into a scuffle while competing for a mate, or someone thought his arm was a cricket and bit into it, Still another possibility is his hand got severed by getting caught under a rock or something in the tank, but that seems doubtful. He should be OK as long as he doesnt have to fight for food, and you feed crix that are small enough so he can easily swallow them without needing to use his hand too much.
