I'm in a photo taking kind of mood today....

odatriad Oct 16, 2004 12:44 PM

since I called in sick today, and feel pretty crappy, I'd figure I'd shoot some pics of my Euprepiosuars today....

my female Blue Tree Monitor

my male Yellow Speckled Tree Monitor

my female Yellow Speckled Tree Monitor

my lonely male Emerald Tree Monitor

kind of a crappy pic of the sticky toepads that tree monitors use to help them grip while climbing in the trees. This is one of my male Blue Tree Monitor's pads.

and lastly, although non-monitor related, a pic of my Greyhound, Stacy.

Cheers folks, I hope everyone's having a more productive Saturday than I am...hahahaha... Take care, have a great day!!

your male and female boehmi look nothing alike strange.

I agree that they differ in the amount of yellow flecking on the head/face area, as well as the body. The chevrons are more distinct and noticeable in the female, although the male's is present, just not as pronounced. Age might also play a factor in the amount of pattern retained as an adult. Hatchlings are born with a very intricate and detailed pattern on their backs, which fades as they get older.. My male is probably much older, being that he was a WC adult when acquired by DnJ's, and was at their shop for close to two years before I obtained him. The female was much smaller, a subadult when I got her.. She has grown substantially since when I acquired her. So, perhaps they lose more and more of their patterning as they mature/age. Only time will tell.

And of course, there is always the possibility that these are from separate localities.. I do not know the locality specifics of these two animals, as the info on their origin surely got lost/mixed up in the trade.

Cheers,

bob

here's a great pic to see the difference between head size/morphology in male and female tree monitors. Although as I have found, isn't always the story...hahaha.. enjoy

Male on the left, female on the right? I'm trying to get the hang of the sex differences. Can't explain it, but some of them just 'look' male or female to me...like your speckleds. Great photos, as usual, by the way.

Did I get it right? One of these days I'll have to get a photo of my savannah and see what sex everyone thinks it is. How old would my ackies need to be before anyone could make a judgement on sex?

hahahaha...sorry leslie, you've got them backwards... Female's on the left, male's on the right. The male has the larger head, with a longer snout. The female's head is smaller, and snout/nose is shorter, and has a steeper slope.

I'd love to see a pic of your sav, while they lack bright colors/patterning, I think they are beautiful creatures, and command much respect. It's unfortunate that most people overlook their beauty and uniqueness.

Take care Leslie, have a great weekend...

Every time I think I'm getting a handle on it, I get it wrong. lol! Oh well, back to the drawing board. That's why I love it when you and Frank and others post pics of pairs. More for me to compare.

Yes, I like my sav. Like I say, it was a rescue, and I really had at that time no intention to get into monitors, but I'm glad I agreed to take Bubba. He/he is really fascinating to watch. Now I've got the ackies, and I really would love to get an argus cross, but there's just no room at present. "Course, there are loads of beautiful monitors I'd love to have, but I know I'm pretty new at this, so I'm taking it slow.
