I've been looking for info on sexing V. auffenbergii and haven't been able to find anything except, a few arm chair herpetologist's opinions. Any realistic info would be really appreciated.
Thank you, Phil

Hi Andrew,
Shame on you - all varanids can not be looked at as the same or treated the same. Would you keep a V. salvadorii as you would V. griseus or V. acanthurus? No. Would you keep V. mertensi as you would V. exanthematicus? No. There are certain habitat and things you can apply to captivity that enhance and make the animals more comfortable, less stress, and so on to accomidate them better to captivity - you know better than this.
V. auffenbergi comes from Roti Island, offshore of Timor Islands. Roti has both forest and desert-like environment, like Komodo Island does - I would 'guess' V. auffenbergi are forest dwellers so apply branches for climbing, oak-leaf substrate for digging and foraging (for insects, lizards, etc) and keep tropical with humidity moderate....Do a google check on Roti island, and play around with that and see what you get habitat-wise...this might give you some 'enhancement' ideas for your animals.
cheers,
mbayless
He asked about sexing, not about husbandry.
thats all I have to say,
andrew
