Just got a Crested Gecko

MuscaDomestica Oct 16, 2004 01:40 PM

Just had a brother of a friend that went to the Chicago Herp show and picked up a juvenile crested for me. The little guy is cute, his body is about two inches long and is light tan with brown markings starting about halfway down its back. The gecko is now living in a spare 20 gallon high critter cage, which I then added some spare plant chips and a whole bunch of potted plants.

My apartment is kind of cold right now so I am using a couple 25 watt red bulbs for heat. I am wondering if I can keep the lights on during the day and if it will affect the plants growth. The cage is near a window (but not in direct light) so they should get enough natural sunlight.

How old is he (she)? The body is as I said before about 2 and half inches long. I am also wondering when I can tell the sex.

I am also feeding him some baby food mixed with calcium and T-rex gecko food and crickets alternately, I haven’t really seen him eat at all but the crickets in the cage seem to be disappearing. I hope he is eating. Also how long can you keep a container of baby food in the fridge after it is opened for a Gecko, I am thinking it is a little different then for a baby should I throw it out after 3 days?

Congrats on your new little one! SOunds like form the size that it as atleast a couple of months old. The breeder should have told whomever picked it up for you but no worries. I would actually keep it on paper towels until i is at lest 3-4 inches long. This way it can't ingest anything it shouldn't. I still follow the directions on the baby food jar, but someone suggested getting an ice cube tray that has the tiny cubes in it and then freezing the left over baby food. This works great and then i don't waste any baby food. Hope this helps!
