How long is too long?

make_urself Oct 16, 2004 03:46 PM

I recently ordered jumbo rats from rodent pro. I had been feeding my burms their medium rats and had them jump up to jumbos. My normal burm eats them with no prob but the albino seems to be having trouble. He never fed on the frozen mediums either. Ive been simply not offering him anything but the frozens and was hoping hed get hungry and feed but no luck yet. Its been three weeks and he started biting the rat but didnt swallow it. How long is too long to wait for him. When should i start getting worried?

Dont start worrying until a few months, even 4-6. Hunger always wins, he will eventually take the jumbos no prob, biggest problem is switching from the rats to rabbits.

Well thats a relief. Im hoping it doesnt get to that extreme bc according to my dad (I wasnt exactly home for that feeding) the albino started biting on the rat but just payed no attention to it after a while. Ill worry about the rabbit when that time comes. My normal phase eats just about anything and everything ive put in front of him. Frozen, jumbos, even baby chicks when he was smaller. He just takes anything...i jsut love him hehe. My albinos just so picky...always has been. Ill keep trying every week. I think he will eventually eat. There is no way im going to feed him live...too expensive. Thanks for the advise by the way.

when i got my burm it had been eating mice..and it took about two months to get it switched to rats but now he has no problem...

That's a relief. All 3 of my snakes quit eating a month ago. They've all been on a bi-monthly feeding schedule, then last month, wouldn't eat. I've thrown away nearly 15 rats so far. The only change is the lower temps. I Haven't turned on my furnace yet but I did put an electric radiant heater between the 2 cages. It raised the inside temps to about 83 but hasn't brought the temps up enough so I'm trying to install 6 flexwatt panels in the ceiling of the 270 gallon cage.

A friend of mine from church suggested temps to me today and said he eventually only fed his snakes 4 times a year. If that's the case why do we all feed 2 weeks? I wouldn't need to freeze rodents and rabbits.

What do you think?

Also how old is the albino? Its strange that you say your albino is the only picky one, my normal will also eat anything I put in front of him but my albino only goes for rabbits.

My burm when I first got her was the most fincky thing, I tried it all, live, pre killed, frozen, nothing. It would do the same as your does and thats, bite it, and let go. The problem was the food was not warm enough. Someone suggested that I put the rat in a plastic bag and then into a bucket of warm water. I did that, and she nailed right when I put it in there with the tongs. My burm was very picky eater. Now she is the best eater.
Switching her to rabbits was easy as well, she ate one the first time I put on in there, again I was warming them up. Now they just thaw out and I put them in there and she finds it and eats it, but she knows its coming because she is in the front of the cage.
Once it starts eating reg then they don't stop at least I have been told and have been seeing.

My albino is about to approach one year of age. Its relatively small but has been growing fast and eating great up until now. Its always been finicky with frozens...loves live....so im just gonna starve it until it eats...if its biting it im sure itll get the hint that thats its meal. Ill give it a few more weeks and see whatsup. Beautiful picture of your albino by the way...hopefully mine will get that big.
