Got a brumation question

sunfox Oct 16, 2004 07:23 PM

When do you start brumating your uros? Ra is ready for a full brumation this year and I wanted to know when is the best time to begin this process. I thought about starting the brumation period in November and ending it in February. I already checked Doug Dix's website and he didn't say exactly when he starts the "winter" for his uros. I want to make sure I get this right since I'm hoping Ra will become a father sometime in 2005.

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks everyone.

Hi there,

No, I don't mind but thanks for asking.
I didn't brumate Ra last year (he was also a juvi) because I didn't feel comfortable enough with him and my husbandry techniques to risk it. He underwent a partial brumation (more-or-less a self-induced brumation), where he automatically slowed down and ate very little. I kept the lights on but shortened the hours. He made it through ok but I was worried the first time. Now, whether this is an acceptable thing to do or not I couldn't tell you. But I can tell you this, you don't have to brumate your uro if you don't want to (it's recommended for their continued good health).

Good luck with your uro

I have had my mali for 7 years now and have never brumated him. They naturally slow down a little for a few months, and sleep more, eat less, etc. There is some debate in this, but my understanding is that it is generally ok to not brumate them, unless you wish for them to reproduce the next year.

Brumating can be slightly dangerous if you don't know what you are doing, or have not had your Uro very long, or if they are ill. So if you do decide to brumate your Uro, make sure to read up on it a lot.

Great Job asking questions!

I haven't brumated my critters before, but was doing research online in preparation for this year. There were several sites that mention how and when they do it, but they don't all necessarily match each other.

There were some pages on the Kingsnake care page that had several people's detailed schedules.
