Lost, found, how soon do I refeed?

Morgana Oct 17, 2004 03:00 AM

My 4 1/2 ft. BP was lost by the vet in August. At that time he'd been treated for injury/infections acquired before I got him. His weight was at 1500 then. After spending two very chilly (in Florida here-ACs on high) months in central A.C. loose in that huge vet clinic he was found & returned to me at weight 1250. The vet rehydrated him, but he still drank & drank & drank when I got him back in his cage. Then awhile later I found urine matter.

I always fed him ft, but I went & bought fk because the vet said he couldn't get him to eat. I let him rest a few hours, and offered him a small-med (4" nose to butt) fk rat (still warm)...which he didn't hestitate on. I was careful to watch him because frankly I was concerned on how weak he seemed. Sure as heck he seemed to have more trouble than usual getting it down, but he got it down. Drank more. I waited awhile & offered him a second rat same size, and he ate it too. He kept looking around like he wanted #3, but I didn't want to over do it, so I backed off.

Since then (yesterday) he's been basking under his light and on a heat pad set at 84. He's always refused the nice hides I have in there & doesn't like the warm end. (I have him in a 48" Precision cage, hollow stump hide cool end, lg rock hide warm end, two big 4" across grape branches that are 18" long, water bowl he can get in if he likes, and that reptile carpet) He keeps returning to the water bowl and just hovering above it...then back to basking.

Any suggestions on anything else I should do to help him? Input on how soon to feed him again? I have a feeling he'll take as much as I give him. He was always a pig, but never put on the weight like I hoped. He's negative on external or internal parasites and infections. I'm probably being too worrisome over this, but I don't want to mess up.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Morg

Take your time with him. He's been under a lot of stress the past few months and you don't want regurgutation problems (I doubt it would happen if he is otherwise healthy, but stress can do it too).

My opinion would be to slowly get him back up to his past weight. There is no need to rush.

So feed again in about a week ya think? Thanks for replying.

Yeah, I'd wait. I think the best course of action would be to keep his feedings on a 7-10 day schedule and slowly increase the size/number of prey being offered. That way you'll be giving him time to adjust and grow.

Good luck.

I'm so happy you got him back - I bet he's happy too. I can't remember, how was he lost again? Hurricane? So he's been at the vet clinic this whole time?

Hey sweetie!

I took him in just before the first hurricane because I thought I heard wheezing-the vet said he found nothing. Before I could pick him up they lost him. A vet tech used a 2" piece of scotch tape to "secure" the incubator top he was in, and he pushed it open. (durrrr)

Thanks for replying. It bugs me he keeps looking for more food..makes me feel like I'm neglecting him. I'll wait a week & refeed I guess? M

Okay, now I remember. I bet he's just so glad to have some food he wants a buffet! I'm sure you were surprised to hear from the vet that your bp had been found. I felt so bad when he was lost after all the care you had given him, but at least he's back home now. I'd probably wait to feed him again, don't want to push it. Congrats again!

The vet lost him in his office back in August, so he had a chilly stay in that AC. He won't calm down-even during the day he's all over his cage...looking for more food I think. He even ripped the background I had attached to the rear wall of the cage off, lol.

Hopefully after I feed him again he'll mellow out. *G*

After starving and cooling off like that, my bet says he things it's time for some love!

Morgana Oct 19, 2004 04:34 AM

Oh man...I didn't even think of that! The poor guys SOL if that's the case, lol! I love him and all, but he'll be my only BP.
