Okay, here's the deal. One of my first time females was ready to lay. I put her in her nest. She dug her tunnel & proceeded to lay. Yesterday morn, she still wasn't done, so I checked on her. I found 3 eggs laid & a dead female. I cut her open to remove the remaining eggs. There was still 38 in her. All looked good except for 3 that had some yellow. Not solid yellow, but like a yellow spot on good fertile eggs. Anyone know what could have caused this? I first thought maybe calcium, but I always increase the intake with my gravid girls, & have not seen this on any of my other eggs.
Any ideas?

41 eggs sounds like a lot for a first timer. mine only laid around 32.

Yes, I know. Mine usually lay anywhere between 22-32 on their first clutch. Do you have any idea as to what the yellow spotting may be? The 3 eggs that she actually laid were solid white. The stained ones were in the middle of her strand as I removed them. And none of them appeared to give any indication as to her being eggbound. All in line, and all fertile. It's not the first time that I've had to go in & remove eggs. I don't like doing it, but I can't let the eggs perish once the mother is already gone.

I can't give you many ideas as to what happened. If the eggs were not grouped together, or seemed "jammed" inside of her i can't think what would have happened. I do know though that some animals just do not make good breeders. She did have a large first time clutch, and maybe she was just too weak to lay them. And by that I don't mean by anything you did or didn't do, I mean maybe she just wasn't built well for breeding. As for the three yellow spotted ones, they may just not have fully calcified. Keep an eye on the eggs and let us know if they were all fertile...
