Paternless Paradox??? Please take a look at the pics and give me your opinion...

CaptiveCreations Jun 28, 2003 03:38 PM

She's about a year old now and was born with a tiny black dot on her neck, and as she gets older she's starting to get black pigmentation on her feet. She's also starting to get another black dot on her lower back. I asked around and was told about paradox albinos, but nobody ever heard of a paradox paternless before. Here are a few pictures of her.

No, actually it's not a blizzard. I hatched her out myself and she's a paternless.

CaptiveCreations Jun 28, 2003 03:56 PM

Actually, blizzards are considered to be the "true" Leusistic of leopard geckos. The fact is this one was born looking like a paternless, and not a blizzard. Her colors change from a rich yellow to a white like in the pics.

bradley Jun 28, 2003 05:56 PM

that is because of the yellow, grey and black color they expeirience. A true leusistic is an animal with blue eyes and a completely white body, blizzards can be white, but its more common for one to be grey, a lot hatch out to have a hint of yellow, and some hatch out to have a completely yellow body.

As for your patternless, it is common for blizzards and just leopard geckos in general to have those kind of spots on their body, I havn't seen to many on a patternless but I imagine its just as common with blizzards. I believe they are just a sort of birthmark and I heard through the grape vine that its not inheritable, just luck of the draw. I wouldn't say you have anything too unusual, but if she keeps getting black on her foot like that then you may have something.

It's weird because the black on her feet wasn't there last month, and now every week she seems to be getting more black pigmentation all over her feet. I took her to a vet to have her examined thinking maybe it was a mold or fungus, but all tests proved negative. Her diet and vitamin/calcium intake hasn't been changed at all, and temps have all been steady so I'm not sure exactly what triggered it. She's still very young, at just over a year old so I guess only time will tell what she turns out like. None of her three other paternless siblings show the black pigment, and neither do her parents.

Well, what kind of substrate do you have her on?? If the substrate has any kind of black dye in it(like the calci sand) if could be the dye coming off on her feet, it has been known to happen.

I use paper towels, so it can't be any kind of dye...

I haven't hatched out any patternless yet myself though I should have some het genes floating around, but my guess would be yes-looks like a patternless paradox to me, if it can be in albinos I don't see why not in patternless. I have a few animals (not patternless, with that odd kind of pigmentation, I think it is like a gecko birthmark...though the feet on yours, I don't know about that. maybe someone who works more with patternless can be of help.

iluvblackfrancis Jun 28, 2003 04:23 PM

i would breed it to another patternless, and see how it is inherited. i've heard of paradox albinos in some snakes, but i've never seen a paradox albino leopard gecko. can someone obtain a pic and post it?

your head will collapse, but there's nothing in it, and you'll ask yourself, "where is my mind"

bradley Jun 28, 2003 06:03 PM

its in the article about the care of leopard geckos and bearded dragons, the picture of the paradox albino is on page 96. I think Gourmet Rodent hatched it. This was the first and only time I've heard of the paradox albino leopard gecko.

I know thast it is not a rare trait on blizzards since I've talked to other peoplew/ blizzards and some of them have spotted blizzards. It isn't surprising that a patternless has it too since it appears on most other morphs too!

Thats not a blizzard... I own blizzards.....That is a patternless.. It looks nothing like my blizzards. Blizzards usually go darkish grey as they age.. but very rarely yellow like that as far as I know.. (I got my male Blizzard and Het.Blizzard female from KelliH.. got my first hatchlings this year..4 of them so far, 2 Blizzards and 2 hets. )

CaptiveCreations Jun 29, 2003 05:18 PM

I just got an email from Ron Tremper and a few others and this is what they said. They said they have all seen paternless or blizzards with the black spots before, but they have very rarely seen an example where the feet have the black pigment on them or where the black pigment is growing or keeps coming in. Ron states that if the pigment migration keeps occuring, then I definitely have something special on my hands. Only time will tell!!!
