What else is mildly venomous besides honoses?

rugbyman2000 Oct 17, 2004 11:26 AM

I know the hognose is one of the mildly venomous snakes in the US, but I heard there are a couple more (not talking about rattlerrs, copperheads, cottonmouths, corals - just the mildly venomous snakes). Does anyone else know which other ones are mildly venomous?

There are more "venomous" snakes out than most people know about. Off the top of my head I can think of ringneck snakes and an 11yr old boy was hospitalized from a garter snake bite ~10yrs ago.

In my area, New Mexico, there are quite a few. What immediatly comes to mind is another rear fanged snake called the Desert Night Snake. Hypsiglena torquata.

Water snakes and Garters may have mild venom as well, though they don't have a fang style delivery system. Some people have exhibited mild swelling and bruising after being chewed on by Waters and Garters.

Ringneck snakes and pine woods snakes, regal ringnecks have an extremely toxic venom towards their prey. Them there are night snakes, I think Tantilla are venomous to their insectide prey.
