Once again, the pictures do not do the snake justice.

It may be that I appreciate these creatures so much and that I spend so much time staring at them that, I see things which the camera cannot reproduce. This partial body shot was intended to show the satiny lustre of this charcoal Yellow Belly and the blue/grey of his eyes.

The venter of this forty inch plus Yellow Belly erythrogaster is white, ivory white under the chin and continuing down the body with black encroaching on the edges of the scutes.

I've never seen or heard of an entirely white venter in erythrogaster. Even transversa has a yellow or cream venter. It makes me wonder if you have an axanthic snake on your hands. There's only one way to find out: breed it!

Breed him to what? My Red Belly? And the result would be...?

I'd suggest breeding your snake with another Yellowbelly (easier said than done, huh). If all the babies come out with yellow bellies, it would suggest a recessive trait is involved. If they come out with whitish-yellow bellies, then it's probably a co-dominant trait. Of course, all baby erythrogaster have tan bellies when they're born so you'd probably need to raise them up a bit to see the difference in ventral color. Sound like a fun project?

In conclusion, it appears I'm talking out of my ass.
