new tortoise enclosure...

turtle_22 Oct 17, 2004 02:31 PM

Hi,

My dad recently helped me to construct a new indoor tortoise enclosure for my redfoot to stay in for the winter months.
It looks terrific! I just want to verify the lighting set up.
I just bought one of those Repti Basking Spot Lamps by ZooMed. It is a 100w bulb. The box reads that it provides beneficial UVA rays.
I also have a heating pad underneath. That is all he really needs for heat & lighting, correct? He is outdoors in the late spring/summertime.

thanks!

I don't know a whole lot about Red foots, but I do have a hermanns tortoise. I use a 100 watt basking bulb for him in the daytime and a UV light even though the basking bulb says it gives beneficial UV lighting. I also use a heating pad for my tortoise at nighttime, but not during the day. I'm not sure if the two are similar or not, but I would recommend purchasing a separate UV lighting system. I could be way off though too.

Most incandescent basking lamps don't provide the right kind and the right amount of uv. It may provide some beneficial uva, but most likely will not provide uvb, which is usually what's needed. If your tortoise requires uv lighting, I would purchase a seperate light specially made for it. They are usually florescents.

You will still need to provide your RF a UV light such as the ZooMed ReptiSun 5.0. My torts are outside most of spring and all of summer but whenever they are brought back inside for the winter, they either get the ReptiSun 5.0 or the ZooMed PowerSun.
