Silicone, or clearcoat first? Chicken or egg?

guttersnacks Oct 17, 2004 03:04 PM

Im building a cage (duh) and Im about to seal the inside. It'll be used for rat snakes mostly, so high moisture is not an issue for me. It's pine sides with luaun back and vinyl floor.
Should I put silicone in the corners first and then put a few coats of polyurathane, or should I put the poly down first, then silicone the corners. Of course, plenty of drying time in between.

Thanx
Tom

I dont know how others feel about it, but when I'm doing any kind of work with caulks...latex, silicone, or otherwise...
I dont like applying it to bare anything. I prefer a sealing coat under it.
Especially wood, so that the open grain does not absorb the compounds out of my caulking.
Also if you need to remove the caulking, it will be easier to do so if the surface is sealed first.
If nothing else, it's not going to hurt to seal the surface first.Gives it a smoother surface to adhere to.
