my only gecko has a very unusual sort of carrot tail.
at first he looked normal, with bright colored body.
but then after a mishap, in which his tail fell off, IT happened.
the tail got all short & plump with black spots an a great orange color.

heh, yeah pretty weird, second one i've ever seen. There was a post down earlier. The rex one.

Very normal. Lots of geckos get new colors especially orange when their tail grows back.
