humidity

caboose Oct 17, 2004 05:35 PM

I know that the humidity inside the general enclosure (not the humid hide)is supposed to be 40% max (preferably lower). Mine is sitting at about 68% and I'm not sure how to get it lower. I'm heating the 55 gallon tank with an UTH pretty much solely. I do have a 50 watt blue "moonlight" bulb that I will use at night, probably only for viewing. The tile substrate is at 90 degrees on the warm end and about 78 degrees on the cool end. The air temp is only about 78 degrees, so I guess I could raise that a bit with ahigher wattage bulb to try and dry it out a bit. I'm not sure what's causing that level of humidity unless our house is that way normally. We do use oil heat, which may be a little more humid.
Anyway, I don't have the leo in there yet, and won't until next Saturday, but I want to get everything just right prior to his arrival.
Do any of you deal with humidity issues and if so, what do you do? I don't really want to hook up a full-time de-humidifier in the room if I can help it.
Thanks, Dean

Well....first make sure you have just the water you need. As in not a huge water dish or misting. Second make sure the cage can air out as much as possible. Make sure you have a screen top. The temps sound pretty good. Check the over all humidity of the room. If it's high your probably not gonna be able to fix it with out a de-humidifier.

Katie,
Thanks, as usual. You've been very helpful. There is no water in there yet, as I don't actually have the leo in there yet. I have had the temp up in there for a couple of hours and the humidity is down to about 62%. The air temp is only about 80 and the humidity has come down, so I think I'm making headway. I Think I'll put the humidity gauge in the room and see what it is. Maybe I will have to use a de-humidifier.
Thanks again, Dean
